Through discussions and demonstrations, they will also show how animal welfare can be scientifically assessed to determine an animal’s needs and wants, and provide information for legislation, management and husbandry. He will bring some of the hardier snakes for the public to meet and handle and will show what research they have helped with, to do with muscle injuries, atrophication in bedbound and paralysed humans and home understanding how hibernating reptiles can help cure this. He will also bring down some microscopes with a few bacterial cultures from human skin to show the yuckies we have on us and if Andy the Stockman can find any some pig lice (can't get human 'nits'/lice as I've cured my kids of them!). Posters of the work we do, course leaflets, freebie pens etc.

Clive Stacey, Education Officer at Colchester Museum will be running 3 presentations where you will be able to interact with a 5 metres long ‘time line’ that you can put objects on, to give an idea of when such things were around!

This could be a mix of natural history items (e.g. a grey squirrel, a deer, bit of a mammoth) and historical items, to help give context (e.g. Roman objects, Victorian objects). During the presentation visitors will be invited to put these objects on the line where they think appropriate. The clincher is the dinosaur bone!!!

YOUNG FARMERS LIVESTOCK JUDGING
YOUNG FARMERS LIVESTOCK JUDGING

Sunday 14th March
From 11am

The Suffolk Federation of Young Farmers Clubs will be looking at the finer points of livestock at Jimmy's Farm on Sunday 14th March.

You can watch teams and individuals from each of the senior and junior clubs taking on the challenge of the stockjudging competitions.  Each competitor will be given 3 rings of stock to judge (cattle, pigs and sheep) and will be asked to place each animal in a class i.e 1st-4th.  These will be compared with the judges placings and scored accordingly (that's where the science bit really comes into play)!

The competitors will be looking at the animals as butchers lambs, pork pigs and butchers beef cattle and not going for the animal that looks prettiest - we hope!  Once the scores have been submitted to the judges the competitors will then be asked to give the reasons behind their decisions and be judged on how well they convey their answers, how they come across and how well informed they are on current market requirements.

The Junior competitors (aged 10-16) will be asked to complete a multiple choice animal health and husbandry questionnaire whereas the seniors (16-30) will just have to answer the questions without the help of multiple choices.

All of these scores will be added together to give the winning Junior and Senior Stockman of the Year title and this people will go on to represent Suffolk at the Eastern Area round of the competition at South Suffolk Show.

This competition presents members with the opportunity to put their training to the test by judging high quality live stock and presenting their findings to industry experts Judging skills include: observation, understanding of the make-up of the animal and market demands.

This competition is one of the longest standing, most traditional elements of the Young Farmers calendar and is a fantastic demonstration of the skills that Young People today need to be able to run livestock enterprises successfully.
